Project Description

Project Title:  View help for Project Title HIFLD OPEN US County Boundaries
Summary:  View help for Summary This dataset represents the primary legal divisions of U.S. states, commonly referred to as counties. In Louisiana these divisions are known as parishes; in Alaska, which has no counties, equivalent entities include organized boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and census areas, delineated cooperatively by the State of Alaska and the Census Bureau. Several states include independent cities functioning as county equivalents. The Census Bureau also includes county-equivalent entities in U.S. territories such as municipios in Puerto Rico, districts and islands in American Samoa, municipalities in the Northern Mariana Islands, and islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The dataset provides consistent county-level geographic units for national data presentation.
